Due to popular demand, a rich chocolate layer cake filled and topped with a tangy cream cheese frosting has returned to the Alden Merrell Retail and Outlet Store in Newburyport after more than eight years.

Known as Chocolate with White, the cakes have been selling really well since being reintroduced on Friday, Jan. 29, said Denise Gillingham, Retail Manager at Alden Merrell's Graf Road store

"For years, people had been asking for this delicious and unique cake,” she said.  “After receiving so many requests, we finally decided to take a poll to see how many people really wanted to see it back on the menu and we received an overwhelming response, so we’re excited to be bringing it back.”

Occasionally the store would offer the cake if they had the ingredients on hand and when they did the cakes flew out of the store. Now the Alden Merrell store plans to keep the cake on the menu to keep its customers happy.

Gillingham said:  “We expect the cake to do exceptionally well on Easter, Mother's Day and at graduation time. We can customize the cake for the occasion with flowers or confetti on the field of white cream cheese frosting to make it special.”

The cake is available in 8" and 10" sizes.

The Alden Merrell Retail and Outlet store, which sells cakes, coffee cakes, cheesecake, pies and tarts in both single- and full-serve portions, is located at 4 Graf Road in Newburyport's Industrial Park. It is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
