Toppans Lane land scuffle UPDATED 02-06-2010 05:30 PM An 11 acre parcel of former farm land at 32 Toppans Lane is under option by Port Healthcare Center, which wants to move its facility from its current location on Low Street, but there are issues that may prevent the deal going through.
Irving Station on Merrimac closed The Irving gas station at 185 Merrimac Street has closed, leaving Newburyport with just five gas stations.  The Irving station at 63 Elm St. in Amesbury also has been closed by the owner, an independent distributor of Irving gas who owned 23 stations in the region.
Panera Bread Coming to Storey Avenue A Panera Bread franchise may soon replace one of the worst Storey Avenue eye-sores – the deteriorating and abandoned Asian restaurant building which used to be Ming Jade, according to city officials and Minco Corp. executive, Austin Spinella.

More dissention on senior center ideas

Some of Mayor Donna Holaday's ideas about a senior citizens center and affordable housing for seniors and others in need are not sitting as well with others as she might like. The mayor is proposing a senior center on the lower floor of the Port Healthcare Center building, an assisted living facility on the ground floor and affordable housing on the top floor. Local banks may not need stimulus money

President Barack Obama wants to provide community banks with $30 billion to spur lending to small businesses, but local banks might not want or need to take it. Obama's plan, which he announced on Feb. 2 at a speech in Nashua, NH, proposes to take $30 billion of the money that was repaid by Wall Street banks and use it to create a new Small Business Lending Fund. This fund will provide capital for community banks on Main Street. | Read more.

Bus service to be more convenient

In the future you may not have to leave your keys at the C&J Bus Terminal when there are too many cars parked in the lot. The bus terminal on Storey Avenue in Newburyport is adding more than 100 parking spaces - but it won’t happen until next year.
